Duncan Lyall

“The bassist of choice for Scotland’s new folk generation, lending his forceful but sensitive grooves, supple dynamics and consummate arranging skills to an evergrowing list of bands and solo artists.”

Bassist for Yorkshire songstress and folk darling Kate Rusby, Idlewild front man Roddy Woomble, Shetland fiddler Jenna Reid, virtuoso guitarist John Goldie and Scots singer Emily Smith, Duncan honed his writing and arranging skills with progressive instrumental folk groups including Croft No. Five, Box Club and Brolum.

In huge demand as a producer and session musician, Duncan has featured on over 60 albums, recently recording for Craig Armstrong (composer Moulin Rouge and Romeo and Juliet) while his production work includes The Shee, Lori Watson and Rule Of Three, Breabach, Box Club, Maeve MacKinnon and Treacherous Orchestra.

Celtic Connections 2012 saw Duncan’s first major foray into composition with “Infinite Reflections”, performed as part of the New Voices series. An album recording of this piece was released in January 2013 under his own label, Red Deer Records.
